Are there any songs that you think that would have made a good Grateful Dead cover? Here are a few that I've always wanted to hear GD do

Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf (in the same vein as PITB... a 3 minute long straightforward rock song that dissolves into a long spacey jam with the opportunity for a reprise)

Life During Wartime - Talking Heads (this would have been a good Bobby song during the 90s I think)

Will It Go Round in Circles? - Billy Preston ("I've got a dance, it ain't got no steps, no I'm gonna let the music move me around")

Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding (good song for JGB... the whistle solo at the end could have been a great Jerry lick)

Three Little Birds - Bob Marley (another good JGB song)

Cortez the Killer - Neil Young

What other songs do guys think would have worked?

Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay

I agree!! I've been saying that since early 80's. Kinda wanted Phil to sing it back then.

I think Bob would have had fun singing “A Boy Named Sue” by Cash. A fun, humorous acoustic song like “On the Road Again.”

Maybe they could have replaced some Promised Lands with a “Maybellene.”

I would love to hear a nice mellow 1976 JGB or GD rendition of “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” with Donna's soft sweet vocals and an extended Jerry solo of course. JGB would have done a nice “Proud Mary” as well.

“Eight Miles High” done by '60s GD would be awesome. I think “Peace Frog” by the Doors would work too, with Pig on vocals. Perhaps “Roadhouse Blues” too.

Jerry and Grisman doing their own take on “Black Magic Woman?” I could see that working.

“Up On Cripple Creek!” That would be sweet.

How about a nice funky “Superstition” with Brent?

Although I can't say that I liked any of the Grateful Dead's versions of Beatle's tunes, I always thought that they would do a good job with "Dig A Pony"
Also, i don't know if they could have added anything significant to Floyd's version but It would have been interesting to see their take on Echoes.

Ray Charles' "What'd I Say?"

Procul Harem's "Whiter Shade of Pale"

Derek and the Dominos' "Layla"

Allmans "Jessica" and "Statesboro Blues"

I think these would have been pretty darn good.

1) Somewhere over the rainbow - not a joke

2) Low spark of high heel boys (great song to go in and out of)

Low spark > dark star > low spark basically fill in the blank with this one

Clapton covered Rainbow during his Albert Hall Run in 2009 I think it was. I have it on disc somewhere. Pretty cool version. Might have been interesting to hear Jerry cover. Seems more a JGB cover than a Dead cover tho'.

Edit: It was indeed 2009. The shows can be streamed at Sugarmegs, if anyone is interested.

Lay Down Sally - I always thought Jerry did it so well with JGB I thought a full on GD version coulda killed it. They coulda stretched the hell outta it and jammed it for days.

'Comfortably numb' in Garcia's post Drums/Space slow number spot. I love the imagery in the lyrics (which would work well for Jerry) and with some clear echoing guitar it could have been a real show stopper.

" I love the imagery in the lyrics (which would work well for Jerry) "

Especially when he was in his Persian phase.

And now for some GD ignorance. Did Jerry ever do covers in the post Space slow number slot? I'm having a hard time thinking of any. This could be a doh moment.

Not many others I can think of...Morning Dew, if it is considered the Jerry post drums slow song.

Good call snori, I'll second that one.....

Just imagine how Donna could have caterwauled her way through "Great Gig In The Sky"? Positively unlistenable!

Rock & Roll (The Velvet Underground)

Perfect for Weir to sing and then a launchpad for Jerry and Phil to jam. Also a great classic.

I would have loved to have heard the Grateful Dead handle Hunter's Promontory Rider. I think that would have been pretty neat!

And a Grateful Dead interpretation of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire might have been perfect!
